The Coalition of American Canyoneers received official information concerning Eaton Canyon. The public information officer for Angeles National Forest, Sherry Rollman, spoke to CAC board member Sonny Lawrence by telephone. She indicated the closure of Eaton Canyon is imminent. There is not a set closure date as yet. The primary motivation for the closure is due to numerous accidents and five deaths since 2011. The belief is that social media is driving the attraction by the public to take risks in order to visit the lower canyon. Ms. Rollman is planning a meeting of the various agencies to further discuss the situation. Such a meeting would take place after July 4. No specific meeting date has been set. The CAC will be invited to the meeting.
The canyoneering community performed a fantastic job. You gave your feedback by phone and email to the National Forest, Congresswoman Chu and LA County supervisor Antonovich. Your individual and the collective voices of the CAC have been heard. Now it is time to problem solve. We need creative suggestions about how to remedy this problem.
