The General is an epic canyon draining a large section of Turret Head (2350m). As of time of writing (August 2016) it has been descended from the 1050m contour through to the termination of the canyon at 600m. The canyon appears to "start" well above the tree line, high on the flanks of Turrent Head and awaits descent.
The canyon is deep, dark and aquatic. The upper sections of the creek are very committing with no escape possible until the canyon opens out in the lower sections. The highlight of the trip is dubbed "the slot of doom" a very vertical section of canyon that narrows down to foot width at it's base. As a result of the narrow corridors and numerous rappels in the water, consideration must be given to water levels prior to entry. Once inside the canyon escape is not possible until the lower sections, it is therefore recommended that escape ropes are placed along the rim prior to entry.
All anchors are bolted (Jan / March 2016) due to absence of natural anchors. Any parties wishing to descend the canyon should assume that many / all anchors will have been destroyed in floods and suitable equipment should be carried to replace any missing / damaged anchors.
